About Mike

Mike Schofield is the most conservative, best-qualified Republican candidate for State Representative.  The incumbent, Beverly Woolley, has announced her retirement and Mike looks forward to the opportunity to become her replacement as your representative in the state legislature.  Having worked directly with the legislature for the past five sessions as policy advisor to the governor, Mike has seen first-hand that we need legislators who will put the needs of taxpayers first, and who place principle above political gain.

Mike was the governor’s point man on the Voter ID bill that will protect the fairness of Texas elections by requiring voters to show photo ID when voting, as well as on the “loser pays” tort reform bill that will help reduce the duration and cost of frivolous lawsuits.  Mike worked for several legislative sessions on the successful efforts to limit government’s power to take your property by eminent domain.  Mike has also advised Governor Perry on Tenth Amendment issues, election law, the Texas judicial system, and appraisal cap reduction.

Before joining the Governor’s office, Mike practiced law at the law firms of Baker Botts LLP and Howrey & Simon, and with the legal department of Equiva Services LLC in Houston.  Mike’s legal practice concentrated on defending Texas businesses from commercial and tort lawsuits.

Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Rutgers University and received his law degree from Louisiana State University, where he finished in the top five percent of his class, served on the law review, and was elected president of the student body.

Active in Republican politics in Harris County for almost two decades, Mike served a Vice Chairman of the Harris Party Republican Party Finance Committee, founded the Harris County Republican Party’s “November Team” organization of party’s donors and volunteers, and was Chairman of the Candidate Committee for the R Club.  Mike has worked tirelessly to elect local Republican candidates for offices ranging from judge to state legislator to governor, and has been elected as a delegate to every the GOP State Convention since 1998.

Active in the community and concerned about education opportunities for the youth of Texas, Mike is a Life Member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where he served on the Speaker’s Committee for 10 years.  Schofield also served on the speaker’s bureau of Texans for Lawsuit Reform.  Mike frequently addresses local organizations like the King Street Patriots and Pachyderm clubs on legislative matters.

Mike is also an active parishioner at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, where he serves as an usher.
